… and Then Chris Sneezed

Andrew Kapcia (person on the far right), known to his friends as Sunshine, passed away Sunday morning after he lost control of his car and hit a tree. He will be missed by many.

This image is from Christmas Day a few years back.

Gear wise, I was running really light – one lens, one speedlight, one stand. We had been out skating and shooting all day, all over Austin, so the last batteries in the speedlight were really gasping their final breaths by the time this scene emerged.

I quickly positioned the light, waited forever for the flash to charge, put my finger on the shutter release, pressed …

… and then Chris (in the red) sneezed – just as he had been doing all day …

… and that was it.

Dead batteries means no more flash juice, which meant our day was done.

I’ve always liked this image, but I would have liked it even more … if Chris hadn’t sneezed.
